Unit 1: Who We Are
Pacing: Weeks 1-4
Unit Overview
In Unit 1, ‘Who We Are,’ students engage in self-discovery through hands-on activities and literature, exploring their unique identities and five senses. They will learn to appreciate individual similarities and differences.
Essential Questions
- What do we do in school?
- How do we learn new things?
- What special things can we do?
- How are we alike and different?
Enduring Understanding
- Every person has a unique identity shaped by their interests, talents, and physical traits. The skills we possess are part of what makes us individuals.
- We explore and understand the world around us by using our five senses. These are the primary tools we use to gather information and learn new things every day.
- School is a shared space where we establish routines and expectations. It is a place specifically designed for us to collaborate, practice new skills, and support one another.
- While every person is different, we share common needs, feelings, and experiences. Recognizing how we are "alike and different" helps us build empathy and respect for everyone in our classroom.
Transfer of Learning Goal
Students will understand their unique identity and the special abilities they possess. They will discover how their senses connect them to the world and develop self-acceptance, fostering an appreciation for the unique qualities of themselves and others.

- Vehicles are categorized by how they move and where they travel, with each type having unique features suited for its specific purpose.
- Transportation systems allow for the movement of both people and essential goods, connecting different places and communities.
- Maps are visual tools that provide a bird's-eye view of the world, helping travelers understand where they are and how to find the best path to their destination.
- Bodies of water, such as oceans, rivers, and lakes, vary in size and movement, requiring different types of vessels like ships, boats, or ferries to cross them.
- While vehicles can look very different, they often share common characteristics like engines, wheels, or steering mechanisms that enable them to function.
Transfer of Learning Goal
Students will understand that transportation enables movement and connection across different environments, including air, land, and water. They will discover how various vehicles are designed for specific purposes, fostering an appreciation for their similarities and differences in facilitating travel and work.

Unit 7: Animals
Pacing: Weeks 29-32
Unit Overview
In Unit 7, 'Animals,' children will explore taking care of pets, farm animals, and wild animals through engaging activities and literature. They will discover how animals grow and change, fostering an understanding of diverse animal life and their needs.
Essential Questions
- How are animals alike and different?
- What animals live on a farm?
- How do animals grow and change?
- How do we care for pets?
- What animals live in the wild?
Enduring Understanding
- Animals share basic needs for food, water, and shelter, yet they possess diverse physical traits and behaviors that allow them to thrive in different environments.
- Farm animals are raised by humans to provide resources like food and materials, requiring specific habitats like barns or pastures to stay healthy.
- The life cycle of an animal involves predictable stages of growing and changing, often starting as an egg or a baby and developing into an adult.
- Pets depend entirely on human companions for their health and happiness, requiring consistent care through feeding, grooming, and affection.
- Wild animals live independently in nature and have specialized adaptations that help them find their own food and protect themselves without human assistance.
- Comparing the characteristics of different species helps us understand the vast variety of life on Earth and how each animal is uniquely suited to its home.
Transfer of Learning Goal
Students will understand that animals are diverse living things that grow and change, each with unique characteristics and needs for their survival and well-being. They will discover how humans care for pets and farm animals, and appreciate the vast array of animals found in various habitats around the world, recognizing both their similarities and differences.

Unit 8: Nature
Pacing: Weeks 32-38
Unit Overview
In Unit 8, 'Nature,' children will explore the wonders in nature through engaging activities and literature. They will discover how changes in the weather affect plants, animals, and people, learning about plant growth, diverse habitats, and the importance of caring for the Earth.
Essential Questions
- What are the parts of a plant?
- How do plants grow?
- What is a habitat?
- What are the seasons?
- How do we take care of the Earth?
Enduring Understanding
- Plants are living things made up of specific parts, such as roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, which all work together to help the plant survive.
- To grow from a seed into a mature plant, most plants require a combination of soil, water, sunlight, and air.
- A habitat is a specific natural home that provides an animal or plant with everything it needs—including food, water, and shelter—to live.
- The seasons follow a repeating cycle throughout the year, bringing predictable changes in temperature and weather that affect how plants grow and how animals behave.
- Humans have a responsibility to protect the environment by practicing sustainable habits like recycling, conserving water, and planting trees to keep the Earth healthy.
- Weather patterns directly influence the lives of people, determining what we wear, the activities we do, and how we interact with the natural world around us.
Transfer of Learning Goal
Students will understand that nature is full of wonders and that changes in the weather affect all living things, including plants, animals, and people. They will discover the interconnectedness of living things within their diverse habitats and the importance of caring for the Earth and its environment.
